Port Washington Deconstruction- COMPLETE

In the summer of 2008 Pragmatic Construction deconstructed a home in Port Washington, WI

Deconstruction, also known as Un-Building, very different from demolition.

ONE

TWO

THREE!

THE PHOTONARRATIVE:

First the soft-stripping, all fixtures and furniture left in the home are carefully removed and stored for donation.  Next comes removal of any good woodworks.

This house was loaded with great cedar, all in perfect shape and harvestable.  Gerald works if free.

Carpet pulled up.

Steven holds up some carpet slated to become paver fibers for a boardwalk project we have coming up.  See Substiwood of Milwaukee.

...and then we get dirty.  Drywall is removed.

Cleanup as we go, the Leatherman keeps the site safe and sane.

Time to address the insulation.  First the cellulose...

Then the formaldi-batt

...and more cellulose

Some careful removal of more cedar.

...and more cellulose

Art shot.

Moving to the roof- tearing off shingles for recycle into asphaltic cement

Shingles

Each year the US tears-off and landfills enough shingles to fill a football stadium area 18 miles high.
In 5 years that hits the moon.

Roofing commando.

We try to do the garage last for storage and weather-proof workspace.

Shingles scraped, time to harvest the underlayment.

Stuck!

Here comes one of our non-profit partners for this job to collect materials for reuse.

Time for the big beams and the interior framing to come down.

Lunch time

Cellulose insulation, bagged for reuse.

This portion of the roof structure off, time for the 2nd floor joists.

Emmanuel sawzalls where necessary, trying to preserve maximum lengths of boards.

Plywood harvested.

Old styrofoam sent to SIP company in Plymouth, WI to be recycled into panels.

Starting to stack and denail for transport as the crew takes the last of the home down.

Big heavy cast tubs are not terribly fun.

Materials staging.

Lannon stone harvested.

Last big beams carefully removed.

Pretty much just a big chimney left.

Last of the framing.

Remove the deck, last donation pickups, clean the site and we are gone.
