Why Rain Barrels?
Because
it is a smart and simple thing to do! Rain barrels passively
collect rainwater ans store it for later use in your garden, your
landscape, or for washing cars.
Benefits of Rain Barrels
·
Rain barrels lower you
monthly water bill. Harvesting rainwater is free!
·
No electricity is
required for operation.
·
Rain barrel water
collection reduces stress on storm sewer systems and keeps the lake clean!
·
You are helping to
conserve the fresh water supply while minimizing your impact onthe
municipal water supply.
·
Rainwater is naturally
soft water; does not contain chlorine, calcium, or lime.
·
Rain barrel spigots are
threaded to fit a standard garden hose.
Water Catchment- Sizing Your
Sytems
The amount of rainwater
you can collect depends on three factors:
1. The amount of rainfall
2. The size of your catchment area
3. The maximum capcacity of your rain barrel
For every inch of rain that falls on a 1,000 square foot roof,
approximately 600 gallons of rainwater can be collected. One
rain barrel can capture approximately 4,000 gallons per year. The
amount of water captured by two rain barrels can water roughly a 200
square foot garden.
Fun fact: If you do the math you will find that Milwaukee rooftops receive
almost exactly the volume of water used by the city each year. Unfortunately only a tiny fraction is harvested.
Installing a rain barrel is cheaper than digging a Deep Tunnel ($300 vs. $2.3B)!
